A Lebanese man with an American Dream wins the U.S. Green Card Lottery and arrives in New York City the day before the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Synopsis

Yearning to leave behind his life of misfortune in the Middle East, Ibrahim Jarrah wins the U.S. green card lottery for a chance to become an American citizen. Ibrahim lands in New York City to accept his green card the day before 9/11... and the events of the September terrorist attacks forever shape the struggles he faces on his journey to capture the American dream.

Inspired by true events, THE CITIZEN stars Khaled Nabaway (Fair Game), Agnes Bruckner (Blood and Chocolate), Rizwan Manji (Outsourced), William Atherton (Ghostbusters) and Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride). Filmmaker Sam Kadi's feature debut is a gripping tale of courage, love, and perseverance; the qualities that make a true CITIZEN.

Director's Statement

THE CITIZEN is my feature film debut. It took over three years of writing and was inspired by actual events. It is a deeply personal story, because like the main character (Ibrahim), I am also an Arab who became a legal U.S. immigrant and the desire to live the American Dream shaped my life.

I'm proud to say that this American film was made by a team of international artists that each had their own very unique perspective on humanitarian rights and immigration. Khaled Nabawy our esteemed Egyptian lead, Cary Elwes our British star, and myself a Syrian Writer/Director, are all dedicated activists that have done work in areas such as the Middle East and Africa. These experiences, along with the fact that Cary and I are also immigrants, gave me the much needed background and perspective to accurately portray Ibrahim's struggle for citizenship and freedom.

This multinational endeavor was embarked on to create a film that represents not only my own life, but the lives of thousands of people around the world. It is my hope that this project accurately captures every man's dream to make the world a better place.

THE CITIZEN is a message of hope, love, courage, and perseverance and I am proud to be a part of it.
