An army veteran invites his friends to Idaho for the weekend to celebrate his engagement.

Synopsis

In the fall of 2010, Thomas Cooper invites six of his closest friends to Idaho to celebrate his engagement to Tasia, a young woman from Russia, who has worked as his nurse for the past several months. As is often the case with reunions, the weekend serves as a catalyst for reevaluation, and consequences follow. Approaching the age of 30, each of these friends stands at the brink of life's great intersection: the moment where frivolities and social recklessness give way to career and responsibility, where the hopes of youth are diminished by the realities of middle-age. THE FALL OF 1980 examines a generation begot by the Reagan era as they come into their own, a mosaic of Millennial men and women wrestling with the timeless question of whether to 'settle' for what seems practical or risk everything in the pursuit of youthful ambitions that increasingly look more and more like idealistic dreams.

Director's Statement

A while back I set out to tell a story about the Millennial Generation. I wanted to raise the question: is my generation's elite made up of people who 'settle' rather than doing the work and taking the risks necessary to strive for what they really want and need.

Additionally, I wanted to compare people coming of age at the turn of the last century to those of today. After reading dozens of books by American authors published between 1900-1920, I selected five (THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, THE CUSTOM OF THE COUNTRY, SISTER CARRIE, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF AN EX-COLORED MAN, THE WINGS OF THE DOVE) to use not as adaptation but inspiration for the five stories interwoven in THE FALL OF 1980. Each story deals with the concept of 'settling' in a different way: settling for beauty, love, wealth, power, and safety. The film sheds light on what challenges are specific to this generation and what challenges are timeless.
